FAQ 1: What are the basic information about ASASIpintar?

Hi kiddos, ASASIpintar is a one-year foundation programme which has only run for 3 years so far since 2012, you guys will be the fifth batch (there are 2 batches in year 2013). So what is ASASIpintar exactly? I’m sure your first impression when you heard the name ASASIpintar, you guys were like I must be really really really smart to be in this program and I’m going to have to compete with geniuses from the country.Well, I’m not going to say that’s true or false, because it really depends on how you define what a genius is, as you study here, you will discover that the term ‘genius’ isn’t just about studies, but a lot others are counted in, soft skills, hard skills, leadership and etc. Believe me as you study here, you will definitely see the truth behind this. It is really a science foundation program (which explains why you have Physics, Biology and Chemistry which will be explained further later). But, starting from 2014, students are also allowed to choose social science. So, you will have two groups: science and social science. This foundation mostly serves as the pathway for you to continue in UKM, but there are other private universities and universities in overseas which accept students from ASASIpintar. This will be further explained in another section.
The reason why it is called ASASIpintar is because we had to sit for an IQ test (UKM 2), and the IQ marks have been considered higher than the other candidates applying, so we are considered as ‘pintar’ and great things are expected from us. But, according to the administrators your batch will not have a pre- IQ test as a requirement to enter this programme. You might have to sit for the IQ test after you have joined the programme just for profiling purposes. So, those who have been selected don’t have to worry about the IQ test. What makes ASASIpintar different than other foundation programmes? Well, as an ASASIpintar student, you have to carry out a research, yes that’s right not a group project but an individual one. But, it was informed that your batch will be conducting researches in groups due to the number of students (your batch is expected to have 500+ students). At the end of the study, you are expected to have conducted a research and present it to the lecturers for evaluation. Research carries the highest weightage out of all subjects so it affects your final pointer greatly. Plus, unlike others we have Statistics as a subject! Courses like Jati Diri Kebangsaan and Kepimpinan dan Membuat Keputusan are also being taught here. The great thing about this is these courses are actually the ones you have to learn during your degree years but since you’ve studied them in Asasi, you can do this thing called ‘transfer credit’ where you carry the marks from Asasi to the degree program. Thus, you don’t have to study them anymore during your degree years, how convenient, right? You can transfer credit from asasi to degree with permission from your faculties.
This program has it all, it trains you to be the science expert with subjects like- Physics, Biology, Chemistry ( a social science expert too for those who choose social science ;) ); it trains you to be able to perform practical stuff-that’s where you have research and it builds the nationalism in you-Jati Diri Kebangsaan. Methods of teaching/learning include class lectures, discussions, group presentations, group projects, lab experiments and etc. The main language being used in class is English, though lecturers may use both Bahasa and English during class. The list of subjects and how they are evaluated in class have been explained in another section. But what you need to know is PERMATA lecturers often give group work, and not just the usual presentations. Once, we had to make a short film inspired by any literature piece that we have learned in Literature Class, how fun is that? Since PERMATA is still new, you can expect a lot of great and unique facilities here like swimming pool, stadium, gymnasium, computer labs and many others.
Thanks for reading!
