FAQ 3: Where will my accommodation be in UKM?
This is a brief introduction to the accommodations at presence when you are studying in asasi pintar. How about if we begin with your learning ground?
So, for asasi pintar students’ batch 2015/2016, here’s something you must bear in mind. All students will most probably be staying at kolej keris mas of UKM Bangi, but then your faculty and learning centre will be in several places due to the number of students including pusat permata pintar Negara (which is still in UKM Bangi) and also other faculties or perhaps in Kolej Keris Mas (subject to change).
Pusat permata pintar Negara is basically a high school set up for gifted students, but had just recently opened up its foundation progamme ( well, the batch is just fresh out of the oven) as it caters to pre-UKM degree course. Pusat Permata pintar Negara is a conducive, well equipped learning ground of a vast area. Although it is a bit isolated from the rest of UKM as it is situated up in the hill, there’s no need to worry.
As a little introduction to its facilities, there are four huge academic blocks, an administration building (where library, office and meeting rooms are located), hostels for high school students, a hall (with a gym at the back), a new swimming pool, stadium, a brand new auditorium and 2 cafeterias and surau for muslims. Well, these are basically the main facilities here in Pusat permata pintar. Since it is a newly constructed school, it is built with a modern look and all the equipments are still quite new.
As for learning, the facility offered by the administration to asasi students are great. There are two biology, chemistry and physics laboratory, a number of computer laboratories, and also classrooms. So juniors, no worries on how conducive the learning environment are to facilitate your study- every inch and corner of Pusat Pemata pintar Negara is designated for learning process (no exaggeration here!). It must also be noted that wi-fi is available except at certain places (although the connectivity ranges from different places to another) and all classes and laboratories are equipped with air-conditioners.
For off-learning activities, Pusat permata pintar Negara has a few facilities to quench your desires. There’s a music room, sports facilities and a gym (as mentioned above). However, the availability of the accommodations ranges depending on permission given and vacancy of its usage.
Based on the experience of the seniors (that’s us), there will be UKM bus transporting all of you from the hostels to Pusat Permata Pintar Negara and back, everyday. So there's no need to worry of burning your calories, ok? The route to Permata pintar is although a little steep, is filled with flora and faunas.
So now let’s move on to your hostels, where you’ll be spending a lot deal of time here.
Well first thing’s first, we have to say that as for ASASIpintar batch 2014/2015, we stayed at Kolej Pendeta Za’ba. But, the batch before us, batch 2013/2014 have experienced life at Kolej Keris Mas, the nearest hostel to Pusat Permata Pintar aside from the dormitories at Permata itself (The one where you all most probably will be staying for the year).
So then, from all our experience and stories we’ve heard throughout our life in UKM (We made friends with Degree, Masters, even PhD students, and you’re also encouraged to do so. Be friendly!), here’s a bit on Kolej Keris Mas.
Generally, the rooms are all twin sharing bedrooms. The single bedrooms will only be given to degree students as they have to pay a different price for the room. Kolej Keris Mas provides a number of facilities including a hall, surau, rooms like Bilik TV and Bilik Kebudayaan, bakery, atm, small mart, printing shop, gym, basketball court and badminton court. Next, the cafeteria is not bad, there are a variety of food to be chosen from (hawker style and buffet style).
There is one bus stop at Kolej Keris Mas. And the shuttle buses that pass by Kolej Keris Mas would be Rapid KL, Zon 3U, and Zon 6. These buses operate from around 7.30 in the morning till 11 at night. (Zon 2 is the bus that takes students and passes by the hostel only. Zon 3U for Kolej & Fakulti, Zon 6 for Kolej to go outside to KTM UKM station, Rapid KL to go to Kajang Town ). Don't worry if you don't understand, you'll get a clearer picture once u get there.
Moreover, the University mosque (Masjid UKM), regularly hosts talks and events, inviting renowned people and speakers from outside of UKM. So students are encouraged to join them. Transport to the mosque can be either by bus, or by walking. (Students especially ladies, please refrain from walking alone at night, there are monkeys out there. Seriously, these “monyet universiti”s are smart!)
So hopefully, from this short concise introduction, you’ll be able to get a clearer picture of what life is like here in UKM.
All in all, we hope that you will enjoy your UKM experience and make a lot of companions.
Thanks for reading! ;)
